Vidyut has been longing for the day of his first job right from his schooling days. While watching few of his cousins and friends join newly into the job, Vidyut has been waiting for his turn to join an organization. Though there is a joy in joining a new work place, Vidyut is keen about knowing about organization ethics which he should follow and hence tries to get this information from few of his friends. Here is some of the key bulleted list of points from Vidyuts diary.

Getting started:

During college days, there would be many occasions where you would have taken An easy go or I do not care attitude. But at work place, this attitude should never be taken. View your work as worship. Get interested and know about your companys mission, objective, goals of your team, organization structure and show a serious attitude towards work. Learning the mission and vision of your company could be the first step, followed by your groups tasks or activities.

Understand your role and responsibilities:

Having understood the big picture of your organization, the next step is to understand clearly about your roles and responsibilities. Try and clearly understand what is expected out of you. Set yourself clear goals with definite time lines. Understand what tools and technique does your group use. If something is new to you, spend some effort and time to learn the same. But prioritize on the learning list based on what is expected out of you.

Give yourself more to do:

Do not just wait for work assignments. Keep reading and practicing whatever would be relevant to your field. Do not feel happy by just doing the minimum work assigned to you. You plan to give yourself more challenges and achieve the same. For example, mastering or hands-on on a particular module may be a self-assignment by you. You could take this as a challenge and complete the same. A lot of times, new joiners feel bored and distracted because there is simply nothing much to do. Hence, most of them land up in doing chatting with other friends, emailing other friends, sending SMS or talking to friends over phone. As a practice, do not open up personal sites or chat sessions. This may prove really distracting and may hinder your progress even when you have work. Instead try to be creative and constructive.

SMART work:

One of the key goals is to do work with involvement and creativity. The questioning aptitude is very essential. Before you start working, analyze completely and be clear on what you need to do. Also, ensure that you know the time frame to complete the task before hand. The number of hours spent in office is not important and only the completion of the task with quality is viewed as success. Hence, do not try to stay late night to impress your boss. Your boss would be much happy if you are able to complete the task assigned and produce quality output within the given time frame.

Timings and Attendance:

Though most of the companies offer flexible working hours a day, be punctual at the time when you come to office. Anybody in your group would be able to say when you would be in office. Also, it is advisable not to take too many days off work as it could distract you as well as you lose the phase of work.

Late starts / Lack of speed:

If you have a weeks time to complete the work, do not start on it late. It might result in you not finishing the task on time. Do not be distracted to anything while working. Distraction of any nature like friends, cigar, personal work, collecting your favorite songs, organizing your photo gallery or preparing for some other exam coming shortly could cause a disastrous effect on your current job assignment. As far as possible, avoid chatting or using your personal mail id or any kind of personal work during office hours.

Training programs and Meeting ethics:

Initially when you have a training schedule, be prepared a bit or you may land up in sudden quiz or an objective test. Enhance your attitude to learn new things. A little or no interest to learn can result in a negative feedback and remark, which may lead to prejudice later.

Whenever you attend meetings or trainings, take a notepad and pen along with you. Sometimes things may be going above your head. But still try to get the key things or factors.

Do mind your body language in meetings. A drowsy, lethargic and sluggish look can very clearly be noticed by others. Try to be as interactive as possible to avoid weary look.

Email ethics

Never try to type out SMS message like emails to your supervisor using short cuts for words. Also, try not to goof up by sending the second mail for the missed attachment or recalling unnecessarily sent mail.

Key contacts:

As soon as you get in touch with your team, try to get the contact numbers of your team mates. Just in case, due to some emergency if you are not able to attend office, you can very well inform about the same to somebody in your group.

It is always good to inform others even if you are not at your desk for an hour. You can tell your teammate or your supervisor about your work before leaving for the same, so that they would be able to plan accordingly.

Magic words:

Do not forget the key magic words like please, thank you, excuse, sorry and try to be courteous always. Recognize the opportunity which you have got and always try to be motivated to learn about the functions and operations of the group within a short span. Always try to be systematic and methodical. Do plan and act to become the star performer of your organization.
