Q&A: In today’s job market, what would be the best/most useful major?
April 2nd, 2012 Filed under: best sales jobs — Career Advice AuthorNo Comments
It’s time for another question/answer. I know a lot of you like these so here we go. This one comes from who asks us: I have to pick a major soon, and I cannot make up my mind. I haven’t exactly had a class that I LOVE yet, and I’ve taken a very broad range of classes (astronomy, math, economics, politics, technology, etc.)The majors that I have pretty much narrowed it down to though are:-Marketing (I’m not super outgoing though, so I’d want to go into market research, not so much the sales part of marketing)-Management information systems-IST (Information Sciences and Technology – the only thing that is turning me off to it is the insane amount of group work, I work better individually, but I CAN work in groups)The two other majors that I would consider would be accounting (it’s what my dad does) and telecommunications.I don’t exactly have “dream job.” My other requirements for what I pick are that it doesn’t involve a lot of traveling, and has flexibility as to where I can work (meaning wherever I want to live I could find a job relatively close to it, such as accounting, as opposed to a job where I would HAVE to move to find work)What should I choose? (And any helpful minors? I’m very good at observing people and their ways, so I’d like to minor in psych – I don’t think a bachelor’s degree in psych would do me much good)Thanks for any advice!I wish I could do something in the medical field, but I am so not suited for that (cringing at the sight of needles entering the skin type of thing).I get weirded out whenever I’m in hospitals really.
Answer: The ones you’ve narrowed down are pretty good. Stick with something you can definitely get a job in- accounting, management, engineering. Trust me- I have an accounting degree and I make twice as much as my college roommates who all took stupid stuff like sociology, communications, psych, art, philosophy. I don’t know where on Earth they expected to get jobs, but now most of them are receptionists and front desk clerks. My boyfriend makes fun of me because he says “whose dream job is accounting?” but excellent job security and excellent pay make this job well worth it!
